Howard commenced refereeing in the local leagues in Rotherham in 1989 and has advanced to become a full time English Premier League referee.

As a FIFA International Referee, Howard reached the pinnacle of achievement by refereeing both the European Champions League and World Cup Finals in the same year, in 2010.

He is the only referee in history to achieve this and was awarded the MBE in the New Year Honours list later that year.

• He is a Police Sergeant currently on a career break from South Yorkshire Police.
• Howard has integrated a hectic schedule on the pitch with a very busy life in law enforcement in the Doncaster and Sheffield areas of South Yorkshire.
